I just recently fell for the Bass. I was looking for a package, since I'm a noob and still have so much to learn. Based on the looks and reviews, this seemed to be the best bass kit for the price.

Like many I was kind of worried after ordering, the contents of the negative reviews began to sink deeper into my mind, but it arrived yesterday and I have no complaints concerning the BASS.

The accessories however, are pretty shoddy. The bag has NO padding and the strap is thin and actually hurts my shoulder. It would be suitable for a ukulele, not a heavy bass. These are two things I will need to replace very soon...ahhhhh more money....

I also have trouble understanding people's complaints about the amp. I may not know much, but this thing is LOUD and I never put the volume all the way up. I can see it being covered by drums, but i play with my obnoxious nephew on his electric guitar, amp and all, and have no trouble hearing what I'm playing.

The instructional DVD is a bit....weird. I wasted about 20 mins on it...but I think that aside from maybe a scale or two you can get much better lessons and tutorials on youtube.

All in all this is a great Bass for my situation. I am a beginner with my only prior musical experience being with the Violin, along with an ongoing lesson on guitar. I'm picking this up for a new hobby and so this sufficient. Very nice sound, look and weight. This is a great way to transition into the bass guitar!

I have been teaching individual bass and guitar lessons for 10 years now after having taught music (band and choir) in the public school system. I'm always on the lookout for better/more thorough/more complete method books to help my students achieve their goals. I have found this method to be very thorough without being boring. The cd accompaniment tracks are great and I use them as the "test"....the students must play along with the track successfully before moving on. If you are considering this book, you are making a good choice.

I enjoy playing drums, but when a nice bass showed up at the local pawn shop, i splurged. Afterwards, I checked out a few volumes by the "names" in bass, but found them either overly complex, or overly exhaustive in information. Ed Friedland put together the "just right" package.

First off, it does NOT depend on TAB. You start with notes. And even when TAB appears far into the book, it is not necessary as you can still play in notes. And as mentioned below, you get to play "tunes" early one, even if they are very simple. Thus, you get to build a base playing along with the band on the CD.

Everything progresses cleanly. You get pictures of fingerings, diagrams of fingerings, and (early on) numbering of the fingering of notes under the notes themselves. In other words...

This is the book you want if you don't have/can't have a teacher. It won't take you all the way there by itself, but you'll cross a few county lines on the way to the big time!

Aight, here's the thing. This book is boring. yup. boring. And you're thinking, "Well, if it's boring, then why'd you give it 5 stars?". Because as a musician you have some choices to make. Playing exciting material poorely, or... play boring material well so that you can play exciting material well.

When I purchased this book I had recently made the decision to switch to a fluid 4 finger right hand method. And this book, although written for left hand method, has the potential to help you mentally seperate all 8 of your primary usable digits. I wrote out opposable right hand patterns to play the written left hand exercises, and I must tell you it has been a journey. But then again I think I've probly doubled in ability in the last year and I attribute much of that to this text. If you purchase this book and practice one of these a day, starting at 60bpm and working to 180, while using at least 12 positions for 20 or so minutes... I guarentee you, you will be a stronger bassists. But then again thats a lot of commitment. If your looking for simple chop builders this might not be for you. Although these exersices are relativly simple, they still require a strength of will.

I can't guarantee you'll improve your dexterity, accuracy, and speed, but daily practice with this book easily doubled my dexterity and accuracy. If you buy it, you have to use it as part of your ongoing practice routine. When I stopped using it, my technique started to fall off again. It was hard for me at first, especially the exercises later in the book, so I used a pick. I was amazed how fast I improved and was soon doing the exercises fingerstyle. I was trying to see how fast I could go initially, but then realized that much of the benefit from doing the exercises came from doing them accurately, with each note sounding clear and strong. The exercises aren't melodic sounding at all; that can affect your ability to do them if you let it. Josquin des Pres doesn't have a lot of verbal instruction in the book (nor does he in his Slap bass book) which is a shame, because he seems very bright and could offer a lot in the way of hints etc. A must have book for bassists of all styles, especially for those that have hit a plateau and can't seem to move forward.
